TRE® emerged out of Dr. David Berceli's (read bio) work as an aid-worker for over two decades where he worked with large traumatized, war-torn communities while living in Africa and the Middle East. His observation and exploration led him to understand that humans naturally contract in response to physical and psychological threats. He noticed that this contraction is instinctual and causes us to curl up to protect our vital organs. His search to find a way to open the body and release tension led him to create Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises. Since shaking is part of our natural behavior as humans -- the body's own built-in system for quieting down the brain and releasing muscular tension as a way of healing itself -- everyone can benefit from TRE®. Shaking of the muscles increases the resiliency of the body because it causes deep relaxation that naturally reduces stress levels. It can release emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety -- whether caused by work stress, excessive worry, conflict in relationships, physical stresses or traumas from accidents and injuries.
