TRE® emerged out of Dr. David Berceli's (read bio) work as an aid-worker for over two decades where he worked with large traumatized, war-torn communities while living in Africa and the Middle East. His observation and exploration led him to understand that humans naturally contract in response to physical and psychological threats.  He noticed that this contraction is instinctual and causes us to curl up to protect our vital organs.  His search to find a way to open the body and release tension led him to create Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises.

Since shaking is part of our natural behavior as humans -- the body's own built-in system for quieting down the brain and releasing muscular tension as a way of healing itself -- everyone can benefit from TRE®. Shaking of the muscles increases the resiliency of the body because it causes deep relaxation that naturally reduces stress levels. It can release emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety -- whether caused by work stress, excessive worry, conflict in relationships, physical stresses or traumas from accidents and injuries.  Whether you are a parent/spouse who would like more patience with your family, a victim of violence or accident, a soldier suffering with PTSD, an athlete needing quick recovery, or simply a person who wants to become more resilient and just feel better about life, you can benefit from TRE®.

TRE® is a simple series of gentle exercises that activate self-induced therapeutic tremors (SITTs) that generally feel quite pleasant and soothing.  These tremors release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma, calm the nervous system, and help the body return to a state of balance, restoring an inner sense of peace and calm.​

When performed in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a natural state of balance. 

The best part about TRE® is that the body does all the work for you so there's no need to talk or retell your story if you don't want.  Bypassing the thinking mind, or ego, allows you to let go of what you've been holding.  

TRE® exercises work for all body types and are easily adaptable for any fitness level or mobility challenge. It's recommended that you learn TRE® from a certified practitioner for at least four sessions before practicing at home independently.

Trauma

TRE® is effective for treating the symptoms of trauma and PTSD. Trauma can include "innocent" trauma such as falling off a ladder or slipping on ice, and can also include shock from more serious events such as car accidents, medical emergencies, sexual trauma, and violence.
