Healing Through Safety & Understanding: A Trauma-Informed Comparison Heal From The Core With Trauma-Informed Education & Nervous System Support A Fearful, Untrained Dog & a Dysregulated Human Nervous System Understanding trauma becomes easier when we look at how fear affects all living beings. A scared dog and a human with a dysregulated nervous system show remarkably similar patterns—not because they are broken, but because their bodies are trying to survive. 1. Fear-Based Behavior Is a Survival Response A fearful dog may hide, bark, growl, or run away. This isn’t disobedience—it's protection. Humans in dysregulation may shut down, lash out, or withdraw. These behaviors aren’t personality flaws; they are nervous system survival responses. 2. A Dysregulated System Cannot Learn or Connect A terrified dog cannot be trained because it cannot access curiosity. A dysregulated human cannot think clearly, solve problems, or communicate effectively because the prefrontal cortex goes offline and the body shifts into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. 3. Healing Requires Safety, Predictability, and Patience Both dogs and humans heal when their environment feels steady and safe. Consistency, gentle pacing, calm voices, and clear boundaries help the nervous system begin to trust again. 4. Protective Behavior Is Not Personal A dog's growl says, “I don’t feel safe.” A human’s shutdown or irritability often says, “I’m overwhelmed.” Compassion—not punishment—helps both feel safe enough to regulate. 5. The Path to Regulation Healing begins with: • Understanding how the nervous system works • Recognizing dysregulation early • Building trust slowly • Creating safe, grounded environments • Using somatic tools to return to safety 6. Recognizing Dysregulation Within Yourself Signs may include overwhelm, shutdown, irritability, anxiety, hypervigilance, or feeling “too much.” These are adaptive survival strategies your body learned—they can be retrained with trauma-informed support. Why It Matters Just as you wouldn’t punish a scared dog into calmness, you cannot shame a human nervous system into regulation. Healing happens through understanding, connection, and compassion. Heal From The Core Supporting clients in reconnecting with safety, rebuilding trust, and regulating the nervous system—one gentle step at a time.
